Pesticides

By purerlife

I was listening to a discussion this morning on the radio about a voting to reduce pesticides by the EU and the fact that most of the member states were voting on the reduction in the use of pesticides on food. You would think this was a good thing considering the huge damage they must be doing to us, but scientists in this country, and only a couple of other EU members were pressing their governments to vote against it! This was because it might reduce the yield of crops if they reduced the use of pesticides on them.

I know that it’s important to have enough food, but there are many people in this world now dieing of cancers, and obesity, surely this must be telling these scientists that the need for good health outweighs the overload of pesticides that is regularly happening. We are worrying about growing enough food, when many people in one part of the world are dieing of starvation, and malnutrion, then on another part of the are dieing of obesity related diseases, it makes no sense anymore to more to me.

Growing our own has led to us really appreciating the food, and the production of it. It isn’t easy, and it takes effort but it is worth it, I think that so many people are so distanced from the way their food is produced that they have lost sight of how to appreciate it for what it is. We love the taste of our own grown foods, and really savour them and the energy they give to us, and we savour the fact that  we have grown them, really thinking ‘wow we did that’! We have grown them all without any need for pesticides, and this has taken time out to care for our produce, clearing off the bugs by hand, chasing the cats away, to make sure it isn’t being eaten or bumped off in some way! But when we have eaten it, we know it’s all been worthwhile.

I also love the fact that other people are not making decisions on what they will be doing to my food, but I am. Those faceless people are making decisions on what we are putting into our bodies daily, something which is vital to it functioning properly and I enjoy the fact that it isn’t their decision any more it’s mine.
