I am still reading Healing Energies of Light by Roger Coghill, which is making me realise how important light is to our lives, and how incredibly important it is to let it back in.
I feel nowadays that we spend so much of our time in boxes, we spend our days in the office surrounded by artificial light, we are lucky if we get a window, but even if we do, generally the light from outside is filtered now. We then go and work out in a gym, then our evenings are spent in our flats, which have no gardens. Companies don’t really encourage office workers to leave the buildings, and most spend lunch hours inside.
On top of stopping our bodies from being out in the light, we now protect ourselves from it with sunglasses, and lotions. Does sunlight ever touch some peoples bodies nowadays, I am wondering?
It is becoming clearer how important light is to our lives, protecting and shielding ourselves in the way we are is not healthy. We have in my opinion been made afraid of sunlight, which when felt on the bare body is a lovely warming feeling. The more time I spend outside now, the more I want to, and this response, I have learnt is probably due to the pineal gland which is in my head!
Roger Coghill says that it is this gland which responds to the altering light levels around us, and then regulates the rhythms of the body according to those levels. From this we produce melatonin, which is a vital hormone needed in our bodies, when we have darkness, it signals to the body to produce melatonin, which then prepares our bodies to go to sleep. The more melatonin we are producing, the less energetic we feel, no wonder so many of those stuck in offices all day are so tired by the end of it. We are probably producing melatonin if there is not enough light.
We need melatonin for many of the functions in our bodies, reproduction, mood, and growth, and we are depriving it everyday from ensuring we are healthy by being out of the sun for most of our lives. Our bodies need sunlight in the day to have melatonin synthesis, which has a knock on effect on serotonin levels, ability to sleep, and also acts as an antioxidant. Just from being outside more, which is such a simple thing to do each day, the impacts could be great, I have to ask why are we made to feel so scared of the sun, when it is so beneficial to our greater health.
